Yep: step by step approach is best; one room at a time; set an alarm for an hour and focus on one thing, for example clearing the floor/seats/tops of furniture. When the alarm goes. Stop and do something fun for a while. Begin again when you are ready. Tick things done off a list so you can see how far you've come.
