I am in a similar state but probably worse as I have 5 children. It is so overwhelming. I was on a search for cleaning buddies. I wanted to find people kind of in the same situation and have cleaning buddies.. like Marie up above said where we tell about what we have accomplished that day and encourage each other. I deal with depression which makes it difficult for me to push myself. I don't want to stay in my messy state but it is extremely overwhelming and these born organized and naturally clean people don't understand. I go to homemaking sites to get ideas and tips but I get so depressed after listening to all these people with clean houses say how messy they are.

One thing at a time is good.. not even an hour http://www.flylady.net says 15 minutes... not even an hour. I thought I would try two 30 minute sessions a day.. one in the morning one in the afternoon... then when I thought about it actually three. I have been doing decent the past few days on after dinner clean up. So that's the third session :) Maybe there is hope for me.

I know it is frustrating if you fall back just pick back up one step at a time. It didn't get that way in one day.. unless you have 5 children.. so you can't expect to get it cleaned up overnight.

If you email Marie about the challenge email me too. Because of the depression I need the extra motivation of accountability to accomplish this stuff.

In response to:Return to class...

I wonder if there's some volunteer work you could do to see if you'd like it. I tried putting everything into boxes and bags once, figuring I'd sort it later. I never did and the mess grew around the boxes. So under all of this are bags of stuff that need to be sorted.

My biggest mess is in my bedroom. Because of divorce complications, I've been preparing to move for a year. At first, I'd pack, then for reasons too complicated to go into, I'd find out I wasn't moving after all and start unpacking. After two or three times of this, I just started packing and decided to leave it packed until everything is settled. So my bedroom was packed full of boxes.

Then I needed important papers and I need them immediately--so boxes got overturned. A laundry basket from the hallway was shoved into my room to hide it when a guest arrived. Everything multiplies now....I can only sleep on half of my bed because the other half is covered with papers, books, and clothes.

I keep starting the cleaning process but get overwhelmed by it all. There's no starting point and no organizing system that would work here. I am disgusted by the 'path' from the bed to my bedroom door and the other one to the bathroom. I have about 3 usable square feet. :( I definitely want to cry.

I've read sites that say to invite your friends over and have a cleaning party, but there's no way I'd invite anyone into this room to see my mess.

How about this: let's challenge each other. "Cleaning buddies," as dorky as it sounds. I'll take a picture of my disgusting mess and send it to you. You do the same if you want. we'll set tiny weekly or daily goals (today, the counter will be cleaned off, for example) and then take pictures of our progress.

drop me an email if you're interested!!
The advice above seems like a reasonable way foreward though. Going a step at a time makes sense to me...

Fresh air is a great healer I find; take some "Me Time" and pamper yourself a little if you can. Find some time for yourself every day and slowly work through the house until things are cleared away/thrown out.
